Speaking exercise

In the era of globalization, is it important to preserve our culture?

Now we are being influenced by globalization so we can accept so many different cultures, food, people, etc., especially in international cities like Shanghai, NY. For instance, so many people from other cities or other countries, come to Shanghai. Shanghai becomes more colorful but it also causes so many problems. Some people from other cities don’t want to adopt the local culture and speak local dialect. They just keep their own way of life. They never want to integrate into Shanghai environment. I don’t think it’s good for them, I welcome people who come to Shanghai and I also want them to adopt the local culture. Thus, in the future, they could integrate into the local culture/circle/environment. If they don’t want to integrate, or adopt the local culture, I think they are destroying our local culture. I don’t want to see this thing happen. I think it’s important to preserve our culture.

For people from other cities, first tip I want to tell them, I hope you learn Shanghainese. It’s a very big point because local dialect embodies/stands for our culture. I used to ask some people from other cities if they can understand Shanghainese, some of them said yes, some of them said no, some of them said a little bit. I also asked them who understand Shanghainese, can they speak Shanghainese, most of them said no. I asked why don’t you learn SH? They said it’s not important for us. It’s enough for them to understand, so I feel very depressed/disappointed because it means they don’t want to adopt the local culture. So, honestly, I don’t welcome them.

For foreigners, I hope they learn Chinese. Ten of 20 years ago most of westerners didn’t speak Chinese, they thought it was worthless. But now, more and more westerners start to learn Chinese. I’m very happy to see that because I think they have shown respect to China.
