Poverty (n): 1- the condition of being extremely poor.
E.g.: Two million people in the city live in abject (= very great) poverty.
E.g.: He emigrated to Australia to escape the grinding (= very great) poverty of his birthplace.
E.g.: Helping to alleviate poverty in developing countries also helps to reduce environmental destruction.

Alleviate (v): 1– to make something bad such as pain or problems less severe.
E.g.: The drugs did nothing to alleviate her pain.
