Vocabulary

Charity (n): 1- a system of giving money, food, or help free to those who are in need because they are ill, poor, or have no home, or any organization that has the purpose of providing money or helping in this way.
E.g.: She does a lot of work for charity.
E.g.: People tend to give to (= give money to) charity at Christmas time.
E.g.: Proceeds from the sale of these cards will go to (= be given to) local charities.
E.g.: UNICEF is an international charity.
E.g.: They did a charity performance on the first night, to raise money for AIDS research.

Donate (v): 1- to give money or goods to help a person or organization:
E.g.: An anonymous businesswoman donated one million dollars to the charity.
E.g.: Please donate generously.
E.g.: Our company sells the samples among the staff and donates all the money / proceeds for charity

Proceeds (n): 1- the amount of money received from a particular event or activity or when something is sold:
E.g.: The proceeds of today’s festival will go to several local charities.
E.g.: It says on the back of the card “all proceeds to charity”.

Amuse (v): 1- to keep someone happy, especially for a short time. 2- to  entertain someone, especially by humorous speech or action or by making them laugh or smile.
E.g.: We amused ourselves by watching the passers-by.
E.g.: Shall I put on a DVD to amuse the kids?
E.g.: I’ve brought an article from yesterday’s paper that I thought might amuse you.
E.g.: I think it amuses him to see people make fools of themselves.

Vegetarian (n): 1- a person who does not eat meat for health or religious reasons or because they want to avoid being cruel to animals:
E.g.: Of the four million people who have become vegetarians in this country, nearly two thirds are women.
