A: At first I tried, but the mother ignored me, because I tried to talk with her online, not f2f because her mother was too busy at that time. He was about 11 years old and was preparing for a very important exam to be enrolled in a middle school. I just thought that he was very busy. Since he was in an international middle school, all of his teachers taught class in English. But he was very poor in English, so he was not that confident. So gradually, he lost interest in English. As time went by, he thought he couldn’t make much progress in English… and he didn’t want to learn. At that time, I talked with his mother, but I just said, his mother was too busy. So I just leave him right there, and did what I could in class, but after class, I didn’t do much to help with him.  His mother seemed not to pay much attention with his child… but if I had another opportunity I would talk to the assist teacher in my school and ask him to call his mother and tell her her son’s performance and invite her to the school.

A: At first I tried, but the mother ignored me, because I tried to talk with her online, not f2f because her mother was too busy at that time. He was about 11 years old and was preparing for a very important entrance exam for a prestigious middle school. I just thought that he was very busy/preoccupied with school homework. Since he was in an international middle school, all of his classes were taught in English. But he was very poor in English, so he was not that confident. So gradually, he lost interest in English. As time went by, he lagged behind his classmates, and so far (behind) that he could no longer catch up. It was clear that he thought he couldn’t make much progress in English anymore… and so he didn’t want to learn. At that time, I talked with his mother, but I just said, his mother was too busy, probably preoccupied with work so she just wasn’t interested in the topic/didn’t show any concern/interest in the topic. It was clear to me that his mother didn’t pay much attention to his son’s academic performance. After that, I did what I could in class, given that, of course I couldn’t slow down the pace of the entire for one individual. But outside of class, I just didn’t know how else to help him.   (Say something that expresses genuine concern and sincerity for the kid)

I also tried to lower down his pressure by decreasing his workload. Instead of asking him to recite all the textbook, I chose some keywords and asked him to retell the story. Also, I told him earlier about the key points I would put in the exam. It worked a little bit. It’s a small progress.

I also tried to lower his pressure by decreasing his workload. Instead of asking him to recite all of the passages in the textbook like the rest of the class, I chose some keywords and asked him to retell the story in his own words. Also, I gave him hints about the key points I would put in/on the exam to incentivize him. It worked a little bit. At least he was willing to prepare/study harder. It’s a small step. If I could have more time with him, I would’ve done better./I could’ve helped more.

Writing exercise

I am sitting at the table and ready for my meal. When everybody else’s attention is fixed on the dishes, I would always hold my bowl to see if it is clean outside. Whenever I find it greasy, I would go and wash it. A greasy bowl in hand spoils all the taste! So a greasy bowl is my biggest pet peeve. I just can’t figure out why some people wash the dishes without using dish soap, or not washing the back of the dishes. Since the plate is a whole, isn’t it natural to wash the front and back together?

I am sitting at the table and ready for my meal. Just as everybody else’s attention is fixed on the dishes/entrees/cuisine/delicious food, I’m holding up my bowl to examine it. Whenever I find it greasy, I would go and wash it. A greasy bowl spoils all the taste! So a greasy bowl is my biggest pet peeve. I just can’t figure out why some people would wash the dishes without using dish soap, or not washing the back of the dishes. Since the plate is a whole, isn’t it natural to wash the front and back together?

I have another pet peeve which is also related to plates. I would never use a bowl that smells like raw eggs. Sometimes the bowl is washed, but not with/without dish soap, so it smells disgusting. Even though there is no grease on it, I would still change a bowl, or wash it again.
Therefore, I have developed a habit of washing the dishes voluntarily or handing the magnificent dish-washing task to someone I trust.
