Vocabulary

flattering: (v) feng cheng/ pai ma pi (adj) makes you look good/suits you
ie. Do you flatter your boss?

event: shi jian

optimistic: le guan

pessimistic: bei guan

anime/cartoon: dong hua

bland: wu wei de
ie. Since/after Chloe came back from Chengdu, she thinks all the food in SH is bland.

Grammar

no action- use “to be”, don’t use “stay”

For events : time tense matter (tense-verb-time marker(in, at, for…) must match)
I will go to Chengdu this Saturday.
“Where did you go last Sat?/When did you go to Chengdu?” – I went to Chengdu last Saturday.
“Why didn’t you come to class last Sat?” – I was in Chengdu last Saturday. <– I’m not here because I was there.
– I have been in Chengdu for a week. (time period , long time)
– I will be in Chengdu before Saturday(only Friday)/by Saturday (Sat inc.)
– My boss told me to finish this file before 8/by 8./that I need to hand in …
– I will give you my reply in 3 days./within 3 days.

Fact vs Event
– I work on (every, usually) Saturdays. <– no tense, NOT an event.
– I will work this Saturday. I’m working this Saturday.<– tense, EVENT.

Have been – actions you have been doing for a while
ie. I have been studying Eng for a year.
ie. He has been my bf for two weeks.
ie. This company has been here (continuous) since my childhood./This company started (one time action, cannot be continuous) in my childhood.

Had been – actions you have been doing for a while but NOT NOW
ie. I had been working for my last company for about 10 years.
ie. I had been looking for a job, but now I decided to stay at home and play.

Have – for things that matter NOW
“What did you study in college?” – I studied Japanese. (just past info)
“Why can you understand this anime? ” – I have studied Japanese. (has a result NOW)

Speaking exercise

One of her students is looking good.  <– you saw this guy just now, and he is looking good NOW
One of her students looks good. <– he’s hot

She left about a week
