Email Service Notes (Jesse)

Hello,

I’m reviewing the demo notes, and there’s a question from the note:

“we drove to the airport, normally it would take 2 hours”

why “would” used here? it takes two hours is a regular thing, why we don’s use “will”?

Thanks,
Fran

Hi Fran – so actually both are OK. The only reason we use “would” is because we want to say something that isn’t real or a fact. I think this would be a “conditional” so if you talk with your next teacher about these, they might be able to help you further with this.

I think the following sentences are OK for your example:

We drove to the airport – normally it takes 2 hours
We drove to the airport – it should have taken 2 hours
We drove to the airport – normally it would take 2 hours

These two are the best in my opinion.
