I didn’t think the English pronunciation was very important as I was studying English in my school.

But the study in Smart English (SE) makes me realize that the English pronunciation is very important. Now you probably would ask me why do I have this awareness of it?

There is a woman who is my colleague sits next to my desk. Her work needs her to have meetings with our foreign colleagues who are based in U.S, Singapore and Europe. I was so annoyed when she was on that call because she won’t think her talking will disturb other colleagues’ work very much, and the most important is her English pronunciation is very poor if compared to the pronunciation of native speakers. It is disaster when she talks with someone in English, in reverse, it is an enjoyment when I listen to the BBC, VOA and speaking by native speakers. A huge difference !

As a Chinese, I might have no right to criticize her pronunciation, however, to be honest, if a Chinese can’t tolerant it, how poor her pronunciation it is?

I think I get some improvements from the studying in SE, even though it is small. Now I will correct something subconsciously when I am listening, reading and speaking. I don’t know it is good for me or not. Am I too picky to do it?

One of my colleagues who sits next to me needs to call our foreign colleagues who are based in the U.S., Singapore and Europe. I was so annoyed when she was on a call because she didn’t think her voice/conversation/volume would greatly disturb others, and in addition/on top of that, her English pronunciation is very poor if compared to the pronunciation of native speakers. Her English pronunciation is a disaster when she talks with others. For me, it is an enjoyment when I listen to the BBC, VOA and native speakers. There’s a huge difference!

As a Chinese woman/student studying English/speaker, I might have no right to criticize her pronunciation, however, to be honest, if a Chinese person can’t tolerate her, how poor can her pronunciation (really) be?

I think I have improved from the studying in/at SE, even though it is small. Now I will correct myself/something subconsciously when I am listening, reading and speaking. I don’t know if it is good for me or not. Am I too picky about this?

Hey Catherine!
It’s great that you realize how important pronunciation is! It’s like the 4 tones in Chinese! Great job! – Celeste
