Your English skills are not strong enough…

Right now my business English skills are at a basic level – I have many years of experience working directly with international colleagues – all of whom speak English – so I have lots of experience managing these types of relationships. Also I have invested a lot of money in improving my English very rapidly over the next 6 months. So Mighty Hive can be confident that English will not be a problem for me in this position.

Formal Response

For over 10 years as a professional in cutting-edge technology, data and analytics — I have mastered how businesses can leverage these tools to grow their business through marketing and media channels. I have acquired an incredibly wide breadth of expertise spanning: computer programming, information technology, and finance, as well as sales and relationship management with some of the world’s leading businesses including Oracle, HP, Check Point, Symantec and Nielsen.

I think my stronger quality is my aggressiveness. I am goal-oriented and competitive, and I have ample experience measuring my progress towards business outcomes.

I also believe my people management and leadership skills are very strong. I am able to organize, coordinate and motivate my team members to stay on-task and focused on growing the business. In short, I believe I have the diverse skillset necessary to help Hive Media grow aggressively in a new market.

Informal Response

In short, I have worked on the cutting edge of technology and big data for over 10 years. Throughout these 10 years — I have worked with some of the biggest names in the industry including Oracle, HP, Nielsen and many more. I have a very diverse skillset for example I have experience leading teams, managing operations, reviewing financials, as well as deep knowledge in all things digital including media and marketing. So for a company that’s trying to grow aggressively in a new market, I can lead a team of sales professionals and meet Media Hive’s goals. I am an aggressive, outcome-oriented person, and I know I can help Media Hive in this position.

Short Version

I have over 10 years of experience in all things digital including data, analytics and advertising. I have worked at some of the world’s biggest technology companies with Chinese and international colleagues. I am an aggressive person, and I love helping young companies scale in new markets.

What do you know about our company?

Mighty Hive is a transformative digital company that is building a very unique platform for mid sized marketers and digital agencies. These marketers and agencies may not have the budget to  outsource all of their digital and ad buying needs, so it is more cost effective to partner with someone like Mighty Hive that can provide a technology foundation that lets them scale their advertising for clients efficiently, and help them make effective decisions.

Short Version

Mighty Hive is making a unique platform to help marketers and digital agencies scale their advertising campaigns. I love Mighty Hive’s commitment to technology and putting the latest technology tools in the hands of these marketers at a price that fits in their budget.

Why are you interested in this job?

When the Sales Director position at Mighty Hive was brought to my attention, I was very excited for two reasons: One, Mighty Hive is a startup company and the idea of leveraging / using my experience and knowledge for a startup looking to grow aggressively was very attractive. And secondly, I have a passion for sales and team leadership. I feel most fulfilled / happiest professionally when I am leading a team of people towards aggressive business growth.

Short Version

I am interested in this job because I know the experience I have will make me successful. Also, I am a natural leader. I love leading teams and the opportunity to work as a Sales Director makes me very happy. I love hitting sales goals and exceeding them!

What important trends do you see in our industry in China?

An important trend that I see happening in China right now is in the area of big data and automation. For example, digital platforms are becoming incredibly sophisticated and smart in who and how they can target potential customers on many different platforms — and these platforms are constantly changing and developing — so the advertising situation is very dynamic. In the future, media and advertising agencies that understand these platforms and know how to use them best for their clients will be able to realize the biggest returns on their investment.

Short Version

The biggest trend in China right now is all about automation. The challenge will be how can digital marketers and agencies leverage automation to make timely advertising decisions — hitting the right audience, on the right platform, at the right time, and on budget.

Why are you leaving your present job?

I am leaving my present job because I take my responsibility to the team that I lead very seriously. In short, my previous company did not communicate to me clearly their intentions for my team and its future at the company. They asked me to unwind our department and team very quickly, and I didn’t think that it was fair to the people that I was leading, or to me as the team leader. I know that in leadership, you often need to make difficult decisions, this includes firing people and changing direction, but I also believe that transparency is incredibly important as well — and at my previous job, they were not transparent with me.

Short Version

In short, my previous employer was not transparent with my about the challenges the department was facing in a very new and dynamic market. I didn’t think it was fair to my team members to fire them all so quickly, when they were not put in a position to succeed in the first place.

Why is your department business not profitable?

While Nielsen has 100 years of experience in the industry and lots of capabilities — sometimes that older way of thinking and more methodic decision-making is not well suited for the local Chinese market which is fast-paced and dynamic. If you want to compete in the Chinese digital space, you must be willing to identify opportunities and strike quickly. Also, Nielsen preferred to develop technology solutions in-house rather than take advantage of external solutions that were often cheaper and faster to deploy. So we were simply not able to compete with our Chinese competitors from a cost standpoint or a speed standpoint.

Short Version

We weren’t profitable because we were not able to control costs like our Chinese competitors. We preferred to develop technologies in house and this was too slow. By the time we saw an opportunity, our Chinese competitors already took it.

What do you think you do best?

Previous teams and employers have looked to me for execution. I think this is what I do best. Very often, leaders must take business ideas that are not developed fully, or ready for the market. My skill is taking those ideas and those business goals, and turning them into something that can be executed, right now. I am very decisive — and once I make a decision, my full focus and attention is on execution of that business plan — not just talking about it. I know and understand how to setup the right goals to measure our success, and how to delegate responsibility and tasks to the right team members to achieve our goals.

Short Version

I am a decision maker. I execute. I am best at taking business ideas and working them into something that large teams can execute right away.

What are some of your strengths?

My two biggest strengths are my ability to work across adjacent industries within technology including programming, media, data and analytics, as well as finance and investment. I have gained this strength after many years of working in these different industries and partnering with different companies in these industries. That brings me to my second and maybe most important strength, which is my ability to close “mega deals” with key prospects. I have a talent for developing new leads, and nurturing those relationships to close big deals. Again, I view myself as a problem-solver and key prospects know that I always put their interests first, and they trust my expertise to help close a deal that allows them to grow and is beneficial to our business.

Short Version

I love relationship management and everything involved in closing mega deals. I work to find win-win solutions for prospects and I know they respect me for this. I have closed deals with some of the biggest companies in the industry.

What are some of your weaknesses?

I have always struggled with keeping a healthy work-life balance. When I take on a new task or project, I tend to get consumed by the project and it takes all of my attention. In the future, I am trying to make sure I invest in my health outside of work so that I am always performing at my best while at the job!

Short Version

I focus too much on the task in front of me! Sometimes I forget simple things like exercising and eating healthy. I am working on this, but I am a very focused person!

What can you offer us?

One, through just one hire, I can fill many key responsibilities due to my wide breadth of experience working with international technology companies. Secondly, Mighty Hive would gain a Director with intimate knowledge of the Chinese market including the latest trends, a network of professionals, and someone “on the ground” that understands the dynamic Chinese market and knows how to take advantage of it.

Short Version

I can offer over 10 years of deep knowledge in the industry plus a person born here in China. I understand the dynamic of doing business in China and what it takes to succeed in this fast-paced market.
