Double F2F Online Class Notes (Nicholas)(W/S/R)

Next Class Focus

You speak very confidently and quickly and you don’t let incorrect grammar stop you from expressing your ideas and this is a great thing! So now lets just keep reviewing these speaking exercises, and let’s start to recognize patterns of how to say these ideas in a shorter more natural native-style.

Homework

Tell me what character traits you think you learned from your parents. Tell me a few that are good, and maybe a few habits that you learned that are bad. Try to use some of the vocabulary from today as well (“I’m concerned with” and “based on my experience”).

Writing exercise

In my student time, I am not a good student, I am weak of study ability.
I know to keep reading is very important, but I canā€™t, when I see the boring words, I feel sleepy. So I found another way to ā€œreadā€ books. I am fall into listen books.
I was listened an online lesson about the original family influence to a person. I think childrenā€™s character base on their parentsā€™ character.

During my time as a student, I wasn’t a very good one. I had very weak studyingĀ abilities. I knew that readying was veryĀ important, but I just couldn’t do it. When I saw boring words, I just felt sleep. So I found/[discovered] another way to “read” books – IĀ have fallen in love with audio books! I recently listened to a lesson online about how your family influences you as a person[how families influence their children. I think a child’s character is based on their parent’s character/I think children’s characters are based on their parents’ characters.

Vocabulary

refuge / safety

e.g. The homeless man sought (looked for) refuge or a safe place to stay.

plural / more than one

e.g. Examples of plural words are children, women, dogs, apples.

singular / one

e.g. Examples of singular words are child, woman, dog, apple.

audio / this is the opposite of “video” and it just means “sound”

e.g. Zora loves to listen to audio books.

“I’m more concerned with…” / I think this thing is more important

e.g. I’m more concerned with the way my child thinks and not his specific grade point average.

“but based on my experience…” / what I have learned is not from a book it’s from living my life and experiencing these things first-hand

tense / a very serious situation

e.g. The situation at work was so tense because we have a big sales deadline approaching.

e.g. The criminal had a gun, the police had a gun, and the situation was very tense.

“to lighten the mood” / the mood is how people feel – is it a sad mood, a serious mood, an angry tense mood – and if you “lighten” the mood then you are making it “lighter” and not as “heavy” or sad. So heavy means sad or serious. Lighter means happier, funnier, more easy going.

e.g. Zora will often share a joke to lighten the mood if people are too sad or serious.

e.g. Work today was so sad, I just needed to lighten the mood a little.

to compromise / is to not go 100% in one direction, it’s to do a little bit of both things…and sometimes when you do al little bit of two things, you do neither of them well…but also sometimes compromise is necessary because we can’t always get everything we want, and if the situation involves another person, we need to “give a little to get a little” form them.

Grammar

“so I do want my son to study this way…” / I am repeating so you understand strongly that I truly DO want this thing, BUT there are other things I have to consider as well.

Pronunciation

studying / not study / finish the entire word STUDY-ING

Words that end in -ED (for e.g. locked and replied) don’t pronounced the -ED separately – say it all together quickly.

Speaking exercise

This drama is talk about a big family and the parents they own three children – they have 3 children and 3 different chapters children and the first one is a boy and the second one is a boy and third child is a girl and the big brother’s chapter is very selfish, and this brother study and live in America didn’t take care about their parents but the parents still (P) very love this brother and the second brother is the selfish too – because they stay with their parents and the parents give everything the brothers need – so every comment or every require the parents would give this little brother – so this little brother a littleĀ spoiled and easy to fighting and like to bully his sister. And then the third child is a girl this girl feels unfair because their parents didn’t give too much love for her and for example like the girl want to buy some books and she want to go to a very famous (p) university but the parents said you doesn’t need do that or go to that school because our family is poor and why our family is poor because we need to take so much money for brothers to go to the university they want so the girl left her home for many years until the mother died, they get together and said solve some family problems and they solved the problem with the other children. If you want to learn Chinese I want to introduce this drama for you. Every chapter we can find the pickup in our real life – like this father’s art we can see our grandmother in mirror.

This drama talks about a big family where the parents have three children and each chapter of the drama covers the life of a different child – so there are 3 chapters for 3 children. The first chapter is about their son, theĀ second is also about a son, and third chapter is about their daughter. The eldest brother’s chapter describes him as a very selfish young man. This eldest son lives and studies in America, but he neglected his parents – even though he doesn’tĀ care about his parents, they still give himĀ everything he needs – so this brother is spoiled and easily fights with andĀ bullies his sister. The third child which is their daughter feels that she is treated unfairly because her parents didn’t provide her much love and for example she wanted to buy some books and wanted to attend a famous university but the parents told her she didn’t need it because the family was poor and they explained that the family was poor because herĀ brothers required the money for their education – not her education. Ā So the girl decided to leave home for many years until the mother died/[passed away], after her mother’s death the family got together/[reunited] and decided they should solve their family problems – and that’s what they did. If you want to learnĀ Chinese, I would like to suggest this drama for you. Within every chapter there is something we can learn and apply to our own lives Ā – byĀ watching theĀ grandfather’s story we learnĀ something about our grandmothers at the same time – it’s like looking in a mirror.

I think when I left my university I am a too student – I think everything like my thinking is too simple – but now I work, I am keep working for 7 years, I think the society, the social is not easy, and the important thing is you need to keep study – and if you are a sales you need make you professional. I think in my student time everything is too simple – it is a little complicated. But I think when I watched this drama like Green Book or local Chinese drama I think in my thinking way I had a influence from my father and my mother, I think maybe they didn’t education me about this thinking way – but I saw I heard – but from my see or from my lesson I think it’s a build up.

I think when I left university I was still thinking too much like a student – I thought about everything inĀ really simple terms – but now that I have worked for 7 years, I thinkĀ society andĀ having a social life isn’t easy. The important thing that you need to know is that you should always be studying – especially if you are in sales – you need to study to make yourself more professional. I think during my time as a student – everything was too simple – but I have found life is more complicated. But I think when I watch dramasĀ like The Green Book or localĀ Chinese dramas I am reminded that myĀ father and mother had a great influence in my life. I think maybeĀ theyĀ didn’t educate me about thinking in this way – but based on my experience or from what I have learned…life is a process where yourĀ knowledgeĀ builds up over time.

Every day I review my son’s homework with my son and because child study ability is limit so when I review the English with my son – the son cannot repeat all the sentence, but in the last moment I would say we keep going we never give up tomorrow your mother will talk to you again, I think it’s the spirit I want to pass to my son. Sometimes I want my son grow up in this way but you know China’s education is you need this grade so I want my son to happy study but I think just slowly is OK and you can do exercise – you can do some piano English study or the math study but everything you need review everyday.

Every day I review my son’s homework with him because my child’s studying ability is limited, so when I review English with him, he can’t repeat every sentence, but at the end of each class I always tell him: “we must keep going and never give up, tomorrow your mother will talk to you again.” I think this is the spirit I want to pass on to my son. Sometimes I want my son to grow up in this way/[manner] but you know China’s education system requires that you achieve high grades – so I do want my son to be happy studying but I think taking the process slowly is OK and you can do many different types of exercises – you can do some piano lessons, some English lessons, or maybe even some Math lessons, but what is mostĀ important is that you review these lessonsĀ every day.

Sometimes I found my father is a human person especially my father is not too smart – is not good at his professional but my father’ humor can make people laughing or feel good or can solve many mistakes situation. So I think I followed my father’s this point. Sometimes is very serious situation or the moment is very nervous – I also speak some like laughing story or my funny things to tell the other people. So I think it’s the good one, I study from my father. In the same times, I think my mother’s chapter is not good because my mother likes to balance two sides like I want to do this, I want to do the other things, and he always choose the things like quickly – the second minute she choose two. It’s easy to change his mind. Sometimes I am easy to hesitate.

Sometimes I would realize that my father is very human – he’s not too smart – and he’s not very good in aĀ professionalĀ environment but my father’s humor can make people laugh and feel good, and this ability can make lots of situations better/can solve many difficult situations. So I think I followed in my father’s footsteps when it comes to humor.Ā Sometimes if theĀ moment is very serious/[tense], or if theĀ situation is a little nervous/[awkward] – I also find myself sharing a funny story or telling a joke to people to lighten the mood. So I thinkĀ this is a good quality I learned from my father. At the same time, I think what IĀ learned from my mother isn’t so good because my mother likes to always balance two sides/[make compromises]. I find myself doing this too. She always makesĀ quick choices and then changes her mind. Sometimes IĀ hesitate too easily.

He can express himself like a cultured person. And just because of a short video he famous on the social media. You can see so many people they hold the phone to shot him because they want impression, they want get impression from this guy, and do to this guy – in my opinion maybe if someone read more books or know everything maybe he is afraid for the world because he just know a little of the world and he cant accept this realize, so he choose another lifestyle. But its like a spirit hurt – I think this guy is spirit hurt.

He expresses himselfĀ like a cultured person.Ā And simply due to a few short videos he became famous across social media. You can see there are so many people who tried to catch aĀ glimpse of him with their phoneĀ because they wanted the views online. In my opinion, perhaps if someone is well read and is veryĀ knowledgeable maybe they are actually just afraid fo the world because he knows so little of this world and he accept this realization, so he chose another lifestyle.Ā But it seems like his spirt is injured or hurt – I think this guy has a spiritual illness.

The ā€œVagrant Masterā€ has been offline for more than a week.

The last time people saw him, the scrawny 52-year-old known
as Shen Wei was being escorted into a white Mercedes-Benz by a middle-aged man in an orange jacket.

When asked where he was going, Shen replied, ā€œTo seek refuge.ā€

But even before he could get into the car, a man in his 20s ran up to ask for an autograph. Shen turned to sign the fanā€™s notebook.

Chinaā€™s latest Internet sensation isnā€™t a wildcat locked in a staring contest with her zookeeper, a wealthy businessman caressing his thousand-dollar pet ducks or a childrenā€™s choir dedicating a whole song to tech giant Huawei.

He is a vagabond who doesnā€™t have a social media account and doesnā€™t own a smartphone. He defied stereotypes: Shen is educated and eloquent, and he provides for himself. He is dubbed the Vagrant Master or Master Shen on the Chinese Internet, and his every word has been recorded by live-streamers, shared across social media in the form of 15-to-30-second videos and closely watched and analyzed by millions.

After three months of stardom, heā€™d had enough.

ā€œI blame no one, but I hate the Internet,ā€ Shen told Chinese newspapers on March 22, at the height of his fame. ā€œThe Internet has brought me nothing but trouble.ā€

This unlikely viral star was discovered by social media when clips of him quoting Aristotle, Confucius and Dante began to surface on Douyin, a short-video platform. To the surprise of many, this homeless man ā€” with uncombed hair, soiled clothes and unwashed beard ā€” turned out to be well versed in literature and philosophy.
