Describe what you do at work. Who do you work with? What is your job (what are your responsibilities)?
Vocabulary
Job vs. Work – job is one thing that you have to do, a position; work is more general, a place you go to work
e.g. My job is clean the kitchen.
e.g. This week we have a new job. We need to design a website for our school.
e.g. Every day, I work for eight hours.
e.g. I am at work all day.
Work harder at / Put more effort in – the first one is to try harder to be better; the second is to try harder to get something, there’s a more definite purpose
e.g. I need to work harder at learning Chinese (just because I want to speak better)
e.g. I need to put more effort in so that I can find a job (I don’t want to be better at finding jobs, I want A JOB)
Concrete – something that is an object, or easier to define
e.g. Philosophy is often very abstract, but construction is concrete.
有
Have / there is – have is concrete, about possession; “there is” is about existence, it is a bit more abstract
e.g. I have desk (I know about this desk, I can go home and touch this desk)
e.g. There is a desk (I don’t know much about it, but it exists)
MRI – magnetic resonance imaging; a big medical machine that uses magnets to look inside of your body
EEG – electroencephalogram; when you measure the electrical signals from your brain
Flashcards – something where you write a question, or something you want to study, on the front, and you write the answer on the back
e.g. I use Chinese flashcards to review vocabulary every day.
Just – can be used to mean that you didn’t do anything else, or didn’t do more than you needed to
e.g. I found a job and I just accepted it (I didn’t do too much comparison with other jobs, I just wanted a job)
Grammar
“-er” is used to make comparisons, even if the sentence is not a grammatical comparison.
e.g. He is taller than me.
e.g. I want a deeper understanding of English (than I have now)
I think there’s little difficult when I’m in job. But I think there’s some trouble when I have deep conversation with foreigners. Maybe I need to expand my vocabulary or learn more about cultural things, so I don’t know which direction I should put more effort. So that’s why I’m here.
