2xF2F Class Notes (Tibo) [S]

Today we focused on:

The apple vs epic games situation and big tech monopolies

Speaking exercise

when Apple Store allows it to be sold on their platform. it is like the apple is offering advertisement and they have a right to charge a certain proportion of the profit.  / comission on the profit  / take a cut
So if the game company wants exposure without wanting to pay they get all the good stuff and it is not right. / they get the benefits without paying

If you don’t agree with it don’t start the cooperation in the first place and it is not right for you to suddenly cancel the cooperation/parnership and start charging fees directly to the players. / charge players directly / bypass the platform payment system

If there are several stores, like online game stores and each possesses 10% , 10% / each have a balanced proportion of the market / market share ….then there is no monopoly and game companies have choices on what platform to display their games on. / list their game on

the status remains equal/  video game companies and the App Store keep a status quo but under current circumstances. Because apple and google play are a duopoly the game company doesn’t really have a choice nor does it have the ability to negotiate. / they are not in a position to negotiate.

Apple’s attitude is either our way or…/ take it or leave it

removing this app from the store is killing the game and apple knows it. / it detrimental to the game
More and more we should be focusing more on the earlier stage of this. -> we should be focusing more and more on…
We wait for the company to grow into a monopoly and we hold antitrust hearing but by that time it is already too late

even if we win the lawsuit it wouldn’t harm the company that much and it would be willing to accept minor punishment so we should do act in the earlier stage
something should be done at an early stage/ the government should act at an early stage.
one should act at an early stage before they become too big to fail.

by saying to the company you need to accept certain terms. for example when you need to remove an app from your store we need to go through a certain procedure.
if they want to grow they will need to bear more responsibilities. It shouldn’t;t be a moral code but it should be institutionalized.

I think it is true but we have begin to see the drawback.-> we have begun
Monopoly has taken a new form and the reason we focus on supporting a monopoly to grow is we want it to contribute to our economy.

They harvest and monetize our data and make it impossible for smaller companies to flourish.
In nations like the US they have too much power. They can even decide which kind of ideology to feed to subscribers./their influence even grows into politics

I don’t do that very often recently -> I haven’t done that very often recently

when we upload or download files we need to have a membership.
Before there was a video about 5G and the company was teased because the one who made the video went to an area which provides 5G tech and he noticed the speed increased but the download speed in the app didn’t change.

Even if you become a membership -> buy a membership / become a member

when we criticize a country saying they shouldn’t shut their door to immigrants. It has autonomy and can decide who it wants to let in.

If you take a DNA test you will discover who are your ancestors.  -> who you ancestors are and it is always made up of several races.
